MCC Theater was founded in 1986 by a collective of young actors, writers and directors. Initial peer-based workshops led to full-scale productions that have made MCC Theater one of New York’s leading off Broadway theater companies. In addition to their stage productions, MCC maintains a playwrights' coalition, and educational and outreach programs for students.

The spaces of their new home, located within the westward expanding theater district near Broadway, were conceived to underscore the process based nature of MCC. A public lobby and bar serve the 250 seat proscenium stage theater and a flexibly configured 99 seat theater. The lobby is also the public space for the rehearsal and workshop studios housed within this new facility. As such, the experiences of all those involved in the process, production, and performance of theater are woven together within this facility dedicated to the making of theater.
