It was obligatory in this project to present what the neuroscience and psychology departments had in common, while maintaining their separate identities. So, the Department of Psychology rises vertically, and the Neuroscience Institute unfolds horizontally. The grade difference between pedestrian and vehicular access to the campus explains the importance of shared stairs and services. Also noteworthy, on the other hand, is how the building seeks to exalt the presence of the bridge over Washington Road by taking on its curvilinear form. The dialogue struck between the two departments becomes a dialectic confrontation in the floor plans: the Department of Psychology’s is basic and simple, whereas that of the Neuroscience Institute is complex and intricate. The presence of molded, pearly glass panes speaks of the content and use of the latter: the clean and light look of glass is something we can associate with a laboratory. (Rafael Moneo)
