Featuring a curved facade covered in large tiles of grey zinc, styled to resemble large blocks of masonry, this 126,000-sq.ft. building is the new home for the School of the Arts which is transitioning from a 7-12th grade program to a four-year high school. Situated at one of the main entry points to University Circle - the home of Cleveland’s renowned art museum, botanical gardens, Case Western Reserve University, Museum of Contemporary Art, and last, but not least, the Cleveland Institute of Art - the new school building lives up to its prominent location. The northernmost stairwell features a monumental digital reproduction of a painted mural made for the building in the 2000’s by Cleveland artist Mark Howard, while the main stairwell at the south-end of the building rises over an entry plaza angled and encased in glass itself. The building is home to airy, well-lit studio classrooms, rehearsal and instructional spaces for students studying a wide variety of creative disciplines; a recording studio for small adds, numerous practice rooms and other acoustically isolated classrooms for bands/orchestral music; and also a black box theater space.
