As Design Architect, CORE renovated and expanded the historic structure that was purportedly the first concrete and masonry residential building in DC. The 8-story, 32,000 SF building enables Arizona State University (ASU) to consolidate its DC office, teaching and event spaces. In order to maintain the historic building exterior on 18th and Eye Streets, the masonry façade with terra cotta detailing was braced in place, and a new building core and concrete structure developed. The design added roughly 3,600 square feet of new space by underpinning and excavating a new basement, allowing for building utility and storage spaces. A special exception permit was granted to increase the FAR and to build a modern addition onto the existing roof level with an outdoor terrace overlooking downtown. That level and the first floor lobby are designated for event space. Classrooms, office space, and conference rooms primarily occupy floors two through seven. (CORE)
