The challenge for this space was to create a new, dynamic image to a very nondescript and functional recreation building. The entire facility was opened up to controlled day-lighting to better reflect the active and dynamic program of the building. Completed in three phased, one of the key features that sets this facility apart is all of the main active student recreation spaces that are designed with “hybrid” ventilation systems which draw cooler outside fresh air throughout the facility — ideal on spring and fall days. This unique attribute not only connects the occupants with the environment, but also helps reduce in its energy use. The slanted nature of the building form allows the building to gracefully pull itself off the main street, providing engaging pedestrian-oriented plaza space as well as an established clear way-finding to the building. Each angled form that is created in the building design points towards campus allowing the building to fully interact with the other aspects of the campus master plan.
