Stephen Yablon Architect created a long and narrow addition to a traditional beach house in South Carolina forms a dramatic backdrop to a 66’ long trapezoid-shaped pool and creates a large outdoor room. Similar in form to a classic Charleston, South Carolina house, a long narrow box located along the lot line and shaded by a long porch, this guest pavilion is highly attuned to the Lowcountry’s climate.
The pavilion is raised above hurricane flood level and finished beneath to provide shaded living spaces cooled by sea breezes coming over the pool. The addition’s site orientation, single-room width and operable windows along both sides allow for effective cross ventilation. The pool-facing low-E glass wall maximizes natural light and views and is screened by sustainably forested wood louvers that minimize solar gain. In contrast to the pool-facing elevation, the rear façade is clad in standing seam metal siding, a material typically used as roofing in this locale, which emphasizes the more private face.
