Brooklyn Children's Museum

Architect/Designer: Rafael Vinoly Architects

Client: Rafael Vinoly Architects

Location: Crown Heights, Brooklyn, NY

Shoot Date:
January 01, 2008
The Brooklyn children’s museum by Rafael Vinoly architects combines bold and colorful forms with sustainable design. The museum’s original building was finished in 1977, but the new design re-imagines and reconfigures the space for a growing audience in Brooklyn, New York. The new museum is a singular structure, which intentionally differs from its context. The buildings bold primary colors and large modern forms were designed to identify it as a landmark, and make it compelling for children. The facade is mostly clad in glossy yellow ceramic tiles dotted with porthole windows and accented by green and red walls. The building was New York City’s first LEED certified museum. Sustainable design elements include geothermal wells for heating and cooling and photovoltaic panels.
