Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) completed a new 1.9 million square foot terminal building to consolidate its international operations into one premier facility. As Lead Design Architect, HNTB was responsible for creating a world-class design image for the new international terminal at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. HNTB created an award-winning design for all project components of Terminal D, a new 1.9 million-SF international terminal complex. The project includes the terminal building, a 23-gate concourse, 8,100-car parking structure, an integrated hotel, two automated people mover stations, an inter-terminal skybridge and the landside roadway configuration.
The building systems boast energy-efficient features which reduce cooling costs by more than 90 percent during peak electrical demand hours. The Terminal D development program includes design of the airport's central thermal storage tank, a structure that utilizes less expensive electricity at night to create a store of ice to cool the terminal during daytime hours when rates are higher. The project was reviewed by the Clean Airport Initiative team of experts to evaluate incorporated features of sustainable design and to use it as a case study for upcoming guidelines for sustainable airport design.
