The Kelp House is a summer home in Fire Island, NY. Originally constructed in the 1980s, the property was in need of a complete transformation that included stripping the structure down to its frame and reimagining the layout of spaces for a family with three young children. Working within the volumes and footprint of the existing structure, Oliver Freundlich introduced a new system of windows to frame views of the mature landscape and create day lit spaces that have generous relationships to the outdoors.

The new material palette and detailing strategy is inspired by the client's nostalgia for her childhood summers spent on Fire Island and by the legacy of some of Fire Island’s great modern architects like Horace Gifford. Douglas fir paneling, oak floors and purple slate tile were selected for their natural color and pattern and provide a warm and durable backdrop for family time. (Oliver Freundlich)
