Otras Formas (Spanish for both “other forms” and “other ways” and a nod to Founder Alex Lithgow’s Latin American ancestry) is a New York-based exhibition space focused on contemporary works in design and the visual arts. The space alternatively functions as a design incubator, gallery, and showroom and features the works of established and emerging creatives. Alex Lithgow’s forms are also displayed in the gallery. Many of the works featured are the result of an ongoing dialogue between Alex and the various artists, designers, and makers. Images shown here include work by Alex Lithgow, DecemberBox, Kin & Company, Algierwork, Aaron Glasson, and others.

From 1999 to 2006, Alex co-founded and operated Caoba colección de muebles, a furniture design/build business, that produced custom and production pieces in the South Bronx that were offered through its retail shop in TriBeCa, as well as showrooms around the U.S. The line was known for its high quality, bench-made furniture forms executed in wood, upholstery, and glass with a warm, modern aesthetic influenced by Art Deco and Mid-Century design. Since Caoba, Alex has worked in various capacities in the luxury design field, including work as a vintage and antiques buyer.

More recently, Alex served as Head of Design at Dmitriy & Co. While at Dmitriy (2015-2020), Alex was credited with having ideated, designed, and developed approximately two-thirds of the current collection. This includes the Blegard, Magari and Masson family of forms, as well as the Arp Chair and Bandra Ottoman, the latter having received a “Best of Year” award from Interior Design magazine. While at Dmitriy, Alex also introduced the Ibrox and Zamalek lamps, which were presented at Next Level 2019 and were the first pieces produced under Alex’s eponymous brand.

Known for his “footed” and “serif end” forms, Alex’s newest collection continues to explore design typologies that he has been evolving for over 20 years that incorporate both zoomorphic and futurist elements. The full collection can now be viewed by appointment.
